Practical training for developers and enginerds

Meet Michael Szul

Syntax Conference 2018 Speaker Feature - Michael Szul

Michael Szul has spent almost two decades in software engineering, and gained experience across the insurance, energy, travel, and higher education industries. He is proficient in application and product development, framework creation, code generation, API building, machine learning, and in the past has consulted for AIG and Conde Nast. At present, he is the principal software engineer for the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine, where he leads the team tasked with rewriting the school’s medical education software. Michael also researches and evaluates applications of natural language processing and chatbots to improve data-driven decision-making and student education.

Michael regularly contributes content on the Codepunk website, and serves as co-host of the Codepunk Podcast (a podcast about programming, technology, and the digital lifestyle, which covers topics including data visualization, artificial intelligence, JavaScript/TypeScript, and .NET programming). Michael shares programming tutorials on his YouTube Channel, on topics which include building chatbots with Microsoft’s Bot Framework and natural language processing tools (including Azure Cognitive Services such as LUIS).

In 2017, Michael became a Microsoft MVP for Visual Studio and Development Technologies, and in early April, 2018 in association with UVA’s Provost office, Michael organized a hackathon to explicitly serve under-represented groups in software engineering and technology. He is currently writing a book on building chatbots with Microsoft’s Bot Framework and TypeScript.

A native of New Jersey, Michael and his wife moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 2009, and are currently raising twins (much harder than programming). His twins were born two months premature, and spent an extended time in UVA Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit, which prompted his decision to join the UVA family in order to give something back.
