Learn About Nathan Hall

Syntax Conference 2018 Speaker Feature - Nathan Hall

There’s more to Nathan Hall than can be ascertained at a glance. To be sure, he’s an educated and accomplished full stack software engineer, but, as the saying goes ‘still waters run deep’.

Nathan attended the University of Virginia where he earned a BA in Commerce/Finance, and his Master’s degree in Accounting.  In pursuit of an accounting career, he moved around the country secured an internship (Ernst & Young in Atlanta, GA) and a paying position at PWC, in the Washington, DC area; all before becoming certified as a public accountant in the state of Virginia.  At this point, Nathan became bored with, and identified aspects of accounting that he disliked. Nathan realized that he wanted to do something more creative with his life, and acknowledged that creativity and accounting don’t mix – “…When you get creative in accounting, you end up in prison.” So, Nathan ‘fled’ the accounting industry to learn code, and launch a career more suitable to his disposition.

Over the intervening years, Nathan cofounded ClarLegal where he developed financial and analysis models to help law firms estimate revenue; has moonlighted as a front end instructor at The Iron Yard; and occupied himself with undertakings like The Odin Project and Wake Up!  Today, Nathan works at Tabula Rasa Healthcare as a Senior Software Engineer.

When Nathan’s not in programming mode, he enjoys taking his dogs to the park; flying his drone, and watching basketball.  Nathan is a practitioner of Orange Theory, and although he relishes the challenge, admits that he regularly gets his ass kicked.  On a lighter note, Nathan embraces facetious humor.  He’s been known to write songs in the Weird Al Yankovic style, and pen replacement lyrics to country music because he finds the original lyrics largely atrocious.  That said, Nathan loves karaoke, and dubs “Midnight Train to Georgia” the best karaoke song around.
